The Texas Coalition for Worksite Wellness formed in direct response to the continued increase in health care costs in Texas that affect both the public and private sector. On average, health insurance premiums in Texas have increased approximately 25 percent in the last several years, compared to the national average of 15 percent (National Academy of Sciences).
In the short term, many businesses responded by shifting more costs to employees – the portion of premiums paid by Texas workers increased 38.5 percent from 2000 to 2004. Yet, this short-term solution creates barriers to preventive care that can help employees stay healthy, manage chronic conditions, and avoid costly complications. Employers also feel the impact financially of this no-win solution through increased cost of care, decreased productivity and increased absenteeism.
